School Screening for Uncorrected Refractive Errors

This is a time-limited 3-phase pilot project in Cameroon, seeking to address the barrier to education caused by poor eyesight

Up to 20% of Sub-Saharan African (SSA) children drop out of school without completing primary education because of poor eyesight. DE HEALTH wishes to sustainably help remove this barrier.

The project will begin with two prevalence and needs assessment surveys, one in the Centre region and the other in the Far North region. The evidence from these surveys will be presented to the Cameroon government and its international partners like the World Bank, UNICEF, and WHO/IAPB to advocate for the development of a national program to eliminate UREs, similar to what exists in other African countries like Kenya or Ethiopia.

During phase 1 and all subsequent stages of the school screening programs, teachers in selected schools will also be screened for presbyopia and provided with reading glasses.

Once the DE HEALTH Medical & Training Centre in Yaoundé is fully operational, screening for hearing impairment and oral health will also be added.

Start date: 2nd quarter 2025

Other Projects to Follow

DE HEALTH has a broad vision for improving healthcare in SSA and plans to implement other health enhancing projects in the future, including but not limited to, the following:

  • Vaccination campaigns for preventable diseases like measles, polio, and HPV (Human Papillomavirus), the latter to protect in priority preteens and teenagers from cervical cancers, among others.

  • Community health outreach programs focused on health education and disease prevention, targeting in priority patients with non-communicable diseases (e.g., diabetes, hypertension) and their families.

  • Use of Telemedicine and eHealth technologies, to enhance the follow-up of non-communicable diseases and support the work of community health workers within the community.

  • Mobile clinics to reach underserved populations in rural areas

  • Health camps offering free or low-cost health screenings and basic medical care, to marginalized groups, both in urban and rural settings.

  • Proactive and systematic screening of cervical and breast cancers in women, in complementarity with efforts to promote cancer prevention through HPV vaccination towards preteens, teens, and younger females.

Like all DE HEALTH projects, each project, once initiated, will be documented, and analysed for lessons learned, for replication or upscaling purposes.

The Simulation Training Center

The center, which will start its operations in the last quarter of 2025, will be the essential and complementary arm of the forthcoming Daniel Etya’ale Medical and Training Centre in Yaoundé.

It will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including AI-powered training simulators, high fidelity manekins, and virtual reality platforms, to provide comprehensive training across a wide range of clinical and surgical disciplines.

The center’s multidisciplinary programs will cover the following key training areas:

  1. Emergency Medicine and Trauma Care, including training in basic and advanced life support, trauma management, and emergency airway management.
  2. Anesthesia, covering training in general and regional anesthesia, including managing anesthetic complications and post-operative care.
  3. Intensive Care and Resuscitation, including mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, and multidisciplinary ICU simulations.
  4. Ultrasonography, covering training in obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, cardiology, and point of care ultrasonography.

  5. Obstetrics and Gynecology, offering training in emergency cesarean sections, postpartum hemorrhage management,  neonatal resuscitation, and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
  6. Pediatrics, clinical and surgical, including comprehensive training in pediatric emergencies, trauma care, and surgical techniques.
  7. General Surgery, including aparoscopic surgery, trauma surgery, and perioperative care.
  8. Ophthalmology, clinical and surgical, including cataract, glaucoma, and vitreoretinal surgery, and cornea transplantation.
  9. Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), offering training in diagnostic procedures, surgical skills, emergency management, pediatric ENT, audiology, voice and swallowing disorders, and head and neck oncology.
  10. Dentistry, offering training in basic dental care, dental emergencies, oral surgery, and orthodontic procedures.
  11. Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology, including training in acute coronary syndrome management, echocardiography, and cardiac catheterization.

The center will provide valuable training opportunities for both novice and experienced practitioners, allowing them to enhance their skills and stay abreast of the latest medical advancements.

By utilizing cutting-edge simulation technologies, the center will provide a safe and effective training environment, enabling trainees to master critical skills before ever touching or practicing on patients. This innovative approach will be a first in Cameroon and in the Central Africa region.

The center will also offer essential life-saving training to healthcare personnel, first responders, and the general public, empowering them to respond effectively to critical situations such as heart attacks, strokes, and accidents, at home, school or on the road.

Agribusiness and Community Development

DE HEALTH’s commitment extends beyond medical care to address the underlying determinants of health, including food security and economic stability.

The organization’s agribusiness venture which is inspired by the Songhai Center in Benin, is a crucial component of this approach, aiming to sustainably improve nutrition, generate income, and empower target communities.

Key project components will include the following:

  • Crop cultivation, which will focus on growing vegetables, maize, cassava, soja, and long-cycle crops such as pinapples, mangoes and avocados using organic farming techniques.

  • Fish Farming, which will focus primarily on raising catfish, tilapia, and carp using sustainable methods to provide a steady supply of protein.

  • Livestock Farming, starting with poultry and pig farming, with an emphasis on high productivity and animal welfare.

  • Food Processing, which will consist of on-site processing of products such as tomato paste, cassava flour, gari, rice, fruit juices, smoked fish, and other highly marketable food products for the general public.

  • Training Programs, offering  professional training in modern agricultural techniques to local farmers, unemployed youth, and women organizations and cooperatives.

  • Fight against child malnutrition and stunting by improving family nutrition and protein intake, through better crops and fish farming products.

  • Supply DE HEALTH’s medical centers with high-quality food, while also generating additional income for DE HEALTH’s medical and charitable work.

The agribusiness project will teach modern agricultural techniques, as well as long-term crop and food preservation.

This initiative reflects DE HEALTH’s holistic approach, combining healthcare with community development for a lasting impact on the health and well-being of the people it serves.

This long-term agribusiness project reflects the unique nature of DE HEALTH’s integrated approach to healthcare. Over time, it will demonstrate how the organization is addressing multiple Sustainable Development Goals including ending poverty and hunger, fighting diseases, and ensuring healthy lives.

The initiative also connects to the idea of DE HEALTH’s mission to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles, by promoting access to better food and nutrition, and will be thoroughly documented and reported accordingly.
